Shaping future research

For LGBTQIA+ people

On trying to get pregnant, becoming pregnant, birth, infant feeding and the first year after birth

There isn’t enough research around LGBTQIA+ people trying to get pregnant, becoming and being pregnant, birth, infant feeding and the first year after birth.

We want to change that and your voice is important.

Who can take part?

  • LGBTQIA+ people

  • Their family and supporters

  • The perinatal healthcare professionals who work with them

  • Surrogates and those who have donated sperm or eggs

This means LGBTQIA+ people who may be able to get pregnant, or whose partner/s may be able to get pregnant, or who may use surrogacy, fostering or adoption (of a baby under one year old).

You need to live or work in the UK to take part.

What will you be doing?

In this short survey we’re going to ask you what questions you want answered by research in this area.

From the questions people send in, we will then identify together the Top 10 priorities for research that would improve care, experiences and outcomes around pregnancy, birth and the year after birth for LGBTQIA+ people.

This survey will be a crucial influence in deciding what research will be funded in the future.

We value your time and lived/living experience. All LGBTQIA+ people who fill in the survey can choose to join a lottery to receive a number of £10 vouchers”

Who are we?

This survey is part of a “Priority Setting Partnership” led by LGBTQIA+ people, LGBT Mummies, LGBT Foundation, Transparent Change, UK Mutual Aid and healthcare professionals. We are supported by the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU) at the University of Oxford and the James Lind Alliance (JLA). You can see more about us on our <webpage> and more about the NPEU and JLA on their webpages.

Grants from the following organisations fund this project: the University of Oxford Nuffield Department of Population Health, the University of Oxford Knowledge Exchange Seed Fund and the British Academy’s BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants Programme.

ABOUT US >

Thank you for visiting the Hospital Infant Feeding Network. This website is a repository of relevant knowledge and best practice resources for health professionals. To join the conversation, ask questions and share your experiences please join us on Facebook or Twitter.

You may have noticed that we use 'additive' language on our website to refer to lactation and human milk feeding. This means that we might refer to 'breastfeeding/chestfeeding'. Chestfeeding is a term that some trans and non-binary people use to refer to feeding their child at the chest if the word breast is not congruent with their gender identity. Using additive language helps reduce a feeling of exclusion for non-binary and transgender people, without taking away from the importance of words like breastfeeding and mother. We do not always use additive language - for example when using infographics created by other organisations or referring to scientific research that didn't use additive language as this may not generalisable. There is a much more detailed description of the additive approach here.
